Region 9 Championships/SWDC/Autumn Classic to be held as planned !

Undaunted by Hurricane Harvey, our Region 9 Championships/SWDC/HDS Autumn Classic will be held as planned at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, TX.  GSEC did not suffer damage during the storm and has been housing many horses that needed rescue.  Most of those will be able to return home shortly and there will be no shortage of stabling for our event.

Hurricane Harvey Relief

Our hearts go out to all those affected by this epic storm. We will post information on how to help as we get it: check the Region 9 or HDS Facebook pages for the most current information.

USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund

FROM Houston Dressage Society:

As many of you know, Houston has been hit very hard by Hurricane Harvey.  Much of our Dressage family as well as many other disciplines have been affected by the storm.  I have heard from many of our exhibitors as they move their horses from farm to farm attempting to save them from the water.

Some horses have been taken to private barns that offered empty stalls, some are at large public and private show grounds. They are now safe from the floods but their owners can’t reach them because it is not safe to travel. Horse feed, hay and even items like buckets are scarce in Houston.  Most people left their farms in a hurry, some walking horses through waist deep water for miles to reach dry ground and a trailer that arrived through “word of mouth” to help transport.  The stories are heroic and heart warming.  It is what we do for each other as horse owners.

Unfortunately, these horse owners will not have homes and stables for their families and horses to return to.  Their hay, feed and equipment is gone.  Their farms will be destroyed by the floods and it will take months if not years to rebuild.  And funds to help them are very limited, if even available.

There is a USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund being distributed through the local Houston SPCA.  The contact for donations is Vlowell@usef.org.  The fund will be dispersed by application to the Houston SPCA.  If you can get the word out to your network to contribute, that would be awesome!  Most barns have had significant losses from equipment to feed to lost revenue.  The needy will be very grateful for any support that’s available.

USDF has also posted information on their website home page.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Julie Madriguera (Pilot Point, TX) on becoming a “r” USEF licensed dressage judge and to Anartz Chanca (The Woodlands, TX) on becoming a USDF L Graduate!

Two Region 9 riders attended the NAJYRC Championships in Saugerties NY July 18-23, 2017

Abigail Fleischil rode Laguna to earn  65.053% and Bronwyn Cordiak on Dschinges Blue achieved a 62.921%. Our riders were combined with Region 7, who also had two Young Rider entries. We had no Junior Riders making the trip. Chef d’Equipe Benjamin Pfabe escorted the girls and made sure all rules were followed and activities well organized and timely. Our NAJYRC Coordinator, Kathy Jones, will be retiring this year. We greatly appreciate her two years of commitment to these duties! Our Chef d-Equipe, Benjamin Pfabe, will return as our Chef for 2018.

If you are interested in volunteering for the NAJYRC position, please contact Region 9 Director, Sherry Guess at  guessdrsg@aol.com
